The Science Behind the 3 Day Juice Fast

Juice fasts seem to have become a popular trend but very few people actually know why they are so effective. In reality, juice fasts aren’t a current trend, they have been around for milenia. Many religions feature fasts that abstain from animal proteins, alcohol and caffeine for the past 3000 years. 

Beyond the religious symbolism of fasting is an actual helath benefit that may be a part of it’s natural inclusion into many cultures.

Fruit and vegetables are rich sources of several biologically active components that contribute to general health and decrease the risk of chronic diseases.

In a study titled, “Health benefit of vegetabel/fruit juice-based diet: Role of microbiome”  the researchers concluded that the plant fibers found in cold pressed juices made of vegetables and fruits had a prebiotic effect on the bacteria of the participants guts.

The prebiotic effect fed the beneficial bacteria,  bacteroidetes and cyanobacteria, that are associated with low body fat and choked out the bad bacteria, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, that is associated with obesity. 

What makes this so significant is that if you just increased the good bacteria, you would have a better opportunity of decreasing body fat and overall weight, however, by reducing the amount of bad bacteria at the same time, the juice fast compounds the beneficial effect.
